The FCX Clarity-The Future is today!

The Honda FCX Clarity is a hydrogen fuel cell automobile, based on the 2006 Honda FCX Concept, manufactured by Honda. The Honda Clarity is equipped with and powered by a 57-litre, 100kW Honda Vertical Flow hydrogen fuel cell stack. The car stores electricity in a 288V lithium ion battery.

The electric motor is based on the motor in EV Plus, rated 134 horsepower (100 kW) and 189 lb•ft (256 N•m) torque @0-3056 rpm. The Clarity can travel on a full tank (4.1 kg @ 5000psi) for a distance of 280 miles, with fuel efficiency of 77, 67, 72 miles per kilogram of hydrogen, in combination with city/highway driving epa (68 mpg). The Honda EV Plus was the first produced battery electric vehicle with non-lead acid batteries. It made an exit when Honda released the Insight, its first hybrid electric vehicle in 1999.

The ‘vertical flow’ fuel cell stack can fit in the center console. the cabin is roomy enough for four passengers. Honda provides a climate control system in the seats, which sends heated or cooled air, through pores in the seat cushions. This way, temperature regulation does not consume much energy. Interiors have a premium look and feel with a roomy front and back seat. The dashboard, instrument panel and center stack have room underneath for storage.

A dot in the center of the speedometer changes color and size to display when you are spending or saving energy. The fully-appointed FCX is equipped with all the modern conveniences such as a satellite navigation system, adaptive cruise control, and electronic stability control. All of this is combined in an aluminum structural cage that provides protection for the passengers and the fuel system. . The structure of the FCX is designed to focus on its small drive-train and boasts of a cab forward design. The line of the windshield begins at the front wheel and sweeps back to the trunk lid in one smooth line called "Dynamic Full Cabin Design". The FCX Clarity has a long hood to provide crush space for crash protection safety. The grille rides above a new bold chrome bumper strip. The front quarter windows are integrated into the doors. The deck holds a fuel tank mounted between the rear wheels to provide for trunk room of 13.1 cu. ft.

The FCX platform is lightweight aluminum, yet it is designed to meet safety standards in the US and in other countries. The car has a single 5,000 psi hydrogen tank which is designed to withstand any impact. The low curb weight is a huge plus in the ride and handling of the Honda Clarity. The FCX Clarity is not available for sale to the public, and will have only 200-300 models released over the next 3 years.
